Lauber (1927–1999) was one of the quiet architects of modern aviation safety: a safety analyst and investigator associated with the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board whose work helped transform the Tenerife disaster from a horrifying anomaly into a lasting lesson in how complex systems fail. He did not become famous in the way pilots, captains, or executives sometimes do. His influence was more elusive and, in the long run, more consequential: he helped teach aviation to see catastrophe as something legible, patterned, and therefore preventable.
Lauber belonged to a generation of investigators shaped by the postwar faith that disciplined inquiry could outpace chaos. His professional instincts were forensic rather than dramatic. Where the public tends to imagine air crashes as singular moments of impact, Lauber worked in the slower, more unsettling register of sequence and interpretation. A runway collision in fog could not be understood by isolating a single error or villain.
